Digital Challenge-Based Learning
(DCHILL)

In an era of rapid technological advancements, traditional learning models are evolving to better prepare students for real-world challenges. Challenge-Based Learning (CBL) is an innovative approach that emphasizes problem-solving, collaboration, and hands-on experience. By engaging students in real-world issues, CBL fosters critical thinking and creativity while bridging the gap between education and professional practice.
As part of the IGNITION project, which aims to raise awareness of digital literacy and enhance digital skills among students and educators, DCHILL places a strong focus on digital challenges. Each challenge presented in the program is sourced from real organizations and incorporates a digital aspect, ensuring that students tackle contemporary issues with practical, technology-driven solutions.
Within the DCHILL module, we organized two Blended Intensive Programs (BIPs) where students collaborated in international teams formed by IGNITION project partners. These programs combined several weeks of online sessions with facilitators and teammates, followed by an immersive face-to-face week at hosting universities. Throughout the process, participants followed the Design Thinking framework, which included:
- Understanding and Observing – Conducting research and gathering insights.
- Defining and Showing – Clarifying challenges based on user needs.
- Ideating – Generating creative and innovative solutions.
- Prototyping, Testing, and Iterating – Developing and refining solutions.
- Demonstrating – Presenting final concepts to real-world clients.
During the face-to-face week, students participated in inspiring workshops, interactive sessions, and creative exchanges, refining their solutions before presenting them to their clients. Not only did students gain valuable skills and experience, but client organizations also benefited from these collaborations. They were impressed by the fresh perspectives that students brought to the challenges, offering new insights and innovative solutions that helped rethink existing problems.
By integrating digital challenge-based learning into international education, DCHILL equips students with essential problem-solving, teamwork, and digital skills while also providing organizations with new ideas and strategies to navigate the digital landscape.
